Tektoo2's 1988 VW Jetta sVR6 : The Story ::.

Let's go back to the beginning. Let's just say that Ted has an affinity for Alpine White mk2's. This being his third, having been robbed of his 91 in the events of September 11, 2001, he embarked on this third installment in his mk2 quest.

It was at H2O International that year that Ted got wind of a certain white Jetta available for the buying. Paul G. of Fast Road Specialties came to him and said, "I've got a Jetta for you… and its white!" Ted, being sick of the PT cruiser, AKA the Beach Cruiser, he had to drive to Ocean City that year, became the proverbial, kid in a candy store. Upon arrival back from the show He began to get things in order to get the car from Paul. Ted claims that the car was not in the best of shape when he went to see it. Ted says, "The car was rocked when I went to see it, but it was well put together and it hauled ass." Once he heard the roar of the open-air intake sound of the VR6 under the hood, Ted was hooked. Needless to say, he picked it up quickly before anyone else could even look at it. Once Ted had the rig in his possession he began the arduous build process. He told Paul when he first picked it up, "This one is going to be different. I've done the Big Bumper, Big Arch thing before and I want to take a different route with this one. This one has to be Euro, small bumpers and all!" And so he did. He booked his time in the paint shop for a respray in his favorite, and you guessed it, Alpine White.

Once the car was in, he started right away sourcing parts form the land across the Atlantic. He began on his long list of emails and phone calls to create the car he had in his mind. So first were wheels. Keskin KT1 Klassiks. He'd seen a set of these wheels on a car in PVW the fall of 2001 and he had to have them. Since no one in the states carried them or had seen them he set out to find them. It took him over 3 months to get them, but when he did finally get them he was ecstatic. Since the car was still in the body shop, he had them in his
living room to ogle over every night (obsess much?...lol). The car was in the shop for just over 3 months getting all the necessary shavings and trimmings for him to pull off the look he was going for.

Finally the day came. The call came from the body shop, "It's Ready!" Fellow GermanSquad club member Jim M. gave him a ride to the shop to pick up his rig. "I was so amped to get it out I couldn't even sit still in the car", Ted proclaims. Once the car was once again in his possession he began the install process. The car came together in the spring of '02 and he was off to the show season. It wasn't until '03 that Ted decided that the Jetta needed a fatter rear end. He went for a staggered look with a change to wider wheels out back; 9 inches filled the wheel wells to the edges.

Then it happened. He decided he needed boost. So he went about trying to acquire an S/C kit to have installed on his already sweet rig. After some "Stress" he says, he got his hands on a Vortech kit and started the arduous task of installing. Long nights in the garage paid off that year at H2O, when he grabbed up a first place trophy in his class. But as we all know this wasn't the end. With the season almost over he started again like he had when he first got the car, fresh! He started up front, with the engine bay, cleaned, smoothed, painted, and just plain
serious. Ted says, "There is enough room in there to seat a person." Once the bay was empty, and then came the dash. Ted stepped it up by installing a Mk3.5 dash in to his Mk2. He is the only one so far with this swap. "I wanted the MK3.5 because it has the look and shape of the mk3, which works well, but it has the look and feel of the mk4, with the red lighting and the textured sharkskin covering…" And he was dead on with the mod as it is a surprise to look in and see something just a little different, as there are many Mk3 dash swaps out there but none like that.

Ted is definitely a student or maybe one of the professors of the "less is more" school of modding. Do you think Ted has grasped the Euro way of design? With statements like, "I opted to change my euro plates to UK from Germany and my single wiper is even set up for right hand drive," we sure seem to think so. Reminiscent of the Campaign Mk1, Ted has opted to have the upper and lower portions of his euro bumpers smoothed and painted body color, which Ted says, "finishes the car." By saying that, Ted misspoke, as he was definitely not finished. He has found one of the few remaining sets of three piece Borbet Type A wheels left in existence. WOW! They say that wheels can make or break a car, and these took an already "made" car and made it better. Ted has built himself one serious machine, and he seems to think, "It's close to done, but I've still got a few more tricks up my sleeve!" All we can do now is wait to see what Ted will come up with next.
